OMAHA, Neb, June 5, 2020 – Thanks to the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and ethanol industry partners, twelve area nonprofits will receive 2,300 gallons of hand sanitizer today so that they can safely serve our community’s most vulnerable.
Many nonprofits are experiencing a shortage in key hygiene supplies as they work to meet evolving community needs, leading them to establish a “Hygiene for Humanity” supply drive. The University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s hand sanitizer donation is the largest donation the drive has received so far. Agencies will have the opportunity to pick up the hand sanitizer today at Girls Inc. of Omaha due to a collaborative effort by the Greater Omaha Chamber, NorthStar Foundation, Werner Enterprises and United Way of the Midlands.
The hand sanitizer is the result of an innovative partnership between Nebraska’s ethanol industry and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Thanks to material donations from Green Plains, Cargill, Syngenta, BASF and the State of Nebraska, the University of Nebraska – Lincoln has been able to produce more than 90,000 gallons of hand sanitizer in the Food Processing Center on Nebraska Innovation Campus since the project began in April. So far, the sanitizer has been distributed free-of-charge to organizations and facilities to help fight the spread of COVID-19.
As local nonprofits work overtime to help those affected by COVID-19, hygiene items like the hand sanitizer provided by the University of Nebraska – Lincoln will continue to be vital to the safety of staff and clients. If you’d like to contribute hygiene supplies to the “Hygiene for Humanity” drive, you can drop off items through June 14 at the following locations:
