We sat down with Jay Durmaskin, senior VP of sales and marketing, and Lloyd Elam, owner of DBS Burke to discuss their success and involvement in the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce.
DBS Burke is a marketing services company specializing in direct mail campaigns. They help small- and medium-sized businesses with their marketing efforts. This is done by identifying their customer, creating marketing products that appeal to that customer and then mailing those products out in the form of a postcard.
The company culture is all about giving people second opportunities. “I wanted Burke to give something back to the community that wasn’t ultimately just about service and trade and profit, but more about giving people a second chance,” says Elam. They want to build a culture where people who normally don’t have the means to learn the skills needed for the job, can come in and get those skills. Even if they don’t stay at DBS Burke, it is still an amazing social program providing people with knowledge, growth and achievement that can transcend even beyond the workplace.
Becoming a member of the Chamber has offered lots of great benefits and involvements in the Omaha community. “The more you put into it, the more you get out of it,” says Elam. Joining the Chamber provides people and businesses with the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and network with others that they normally wouldn’t come in contact with. People have the ability to share, with a collective group of people, interests of economic development in the community.
Jay and Lloyd implore others to get involved in the Chamber and the community. “Omaha people like to do business with other people that are helping the community,” says Durmaskin. “Also, invest in your people, help them grow and give them a second chance if they need it. The success of your business relies on focusing on your employees.”
