A Journalism Teacher Helps Us Outline the 5 W’s

Rob Lindquist, the journalism adviser at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, has been teaching students about the five W’s + How for eight of his ten years as an educator. It’s information gathering 101, and we’re channeling that time-tested formula into a compelling exposé – why Lindquist’s colleagues-in-education should get on-board for Careerockit 2019.

What | Careerockit – an annual program of the Greater Omaha Chamber that brings our business and educational communities together. The Council Bluffs Community School District has participated in Careerockit since its inception in 2017.

“Our district got involved early and I was asked to help with everything as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher,” Lindquist says. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to see different career opportunities that they might not have thought about previously.”

In 2018, almost 200 area businesses and organizations hosted tours, workshops, hands-on activities and other experiences during Careerockit week.

“Along with the more typical experiences of students going to a job site, our school was involved with a virtual tour of Warren Distribution where I took a GoPro and did a live tour,” Lindquist says. “We also had social media going on at the same time so students could ask questions and I would relay that to our guide and students were getting answers in real-time.”

He continues, “We had many other guests come into our building during Careerockit and speak with large groups of students about the different professions in their field (for example, the marketing side of one of our local hospitals).”

Why | To educate, excite and inspire tomorrow’s workforce. During Careerockit, students gain direct exposure to the range of opportunities awaiting them in Greater Omaha after graduation – all to build our talent pipeline and ensure our region can meet its current and future talent needs.

“Students don’t always understand all of the possibilities of different jobs within a field. Careerockit exposes them to those options available. Students are able to get hands-on experiences which could be the driving force for career choice,” Lindquist says.
